Nurul

32 years old
Food Vendor & Part-time online seller

Here's Her Story

Nurul has always had a farm next to her home in Kampung Pinolobuh, Kota Belud. She had been farming even before joining this project, but had never succeeded. She had no idea about vermicomposting, the different types of soil and its uses, and had never thought of building a farming frame to protect her crops. These were the reasons her crops were frequently attacked by pests, had nutrient deficiency, or faced sudden deaths. After having to encounter all these challenges on her own, she was highly discouraged and she started to lose hope in farming.

After joining and learning from this project, she is now highly enthusiastic in farming. “I felt really lucky to be able to join this project, because I can learn with other farmers together and have proper farming guidance given by the team,” said Nurul. Her greatest lesson was to be able to learn how to make her own organic pesticides to prevent pest attacks and use vermicomposting as an organic fertilizer to help her crops grow faster.

This project has also taught her how to manage her time well. As a food vendor, she tends to use most of her time in preparing and selling food. This is why she always ensures to arrange her time schedule effectively, so that she is able to check on her farm condition twice a day daily. She also mentioned that being able to witness her crops growing in a healthy condition helps to reduce her stress.

By selling her excess crops from her first 3 harvests to the nearby community, she was able to earn an extra income of around RM300. Going forward, she is motivated to continue farming on a bigger scale in the future, so that she can fulfill more of her family needs.
