Crafting a Path Toward Independence for Rural Sabah Women

The Rural Challenge

In rural Sabah, many women rely on inconsistent daily-wage jobs like rubber tapping or seasonal harvests. Since these jobs rely on weather and market conditions, their income is often unstable. Household responsibilities also limit their ability to travel or work outside the village.

Although many women have a natural interest in making crafts and working with their hands, limited access to proper training, tools, materials, market exposure makes it difficult to turn these skills into real income opportunities.

Living far from cities creates additional challenges. Access to materials, training, and buyers is limited, meaning many handmade items remain within the village and rarely reach wider markets.

As a result, many women with creativity and potential are unable to turn their skills into sustainable sources of income.

The Solution

To create new income opportunities for rural women, we run hands-on craft programme guided by our in-house designer. These programme focus on teaching practical skills that participants can continue using from home.

Participants learn step-by-step techniques such as basic product design, sewing, and crafting methods that help them create useful, well-made items. The training is beginner-friendly, allowing women to learn at their own pace while gaining confidence in their abilities.

The programme also introduces participants to working with upcycled materials, showing how existing materials can be repurposed into practical products for everyday use.

Over time, these skills allow participants to create market-ready products that can be shared through the BorneoCraft platform, opening the door to new income opportunities.

Update 3

What began with just 5 women is now growing into something bigger!

We started with just 5 women in our first craft workshop programme. We kept it small on purpose, because we wanted to make sure each of them could learn properly and receive the guidance they needed every step of the way.

But what we didn’t expect was how quickly they would grow. Many of them already had an interest in crafting, and with the right support, they picked up new skills faster than we imagined.

So when we returned for our second craft workshop programme, we welcomed 10 new women.

This time, it wasn’t just us teaching. The first group stepped forward — guiding, supporting, and sharing what they had learned along with our in house designer.

From understanding designs to creating their first pieces, they stood side by side with the new participants.

What started as a simple craft programme is slowly becoming something more. A growing community where women learn, support one another, and rise together!

And this is only the beginning, we can’t wait to see how far they will go!

Update 2

Sandra has always loved making crafts, but she never imagined it could become a source of income!

Growing up, she watched her mother make necklaces and bead bracelets, slowly picking up the skills along the way.

In her village, crafting is nothing new. Many people create handmade items using natural materials like dalai beads and leputung. But most of the time, what they make is based on what they already know, with little exposure to what people outside the village might want.

At the same time, making a living hasn’t always been easy.

Sandra takes on different roles like farming, rubber tapping, and occasionally guiding visitors around her village. But these jobs depend heavily on the seasons. Some months are better than others, but on average, she earns only around RM300 to RM500.

When she heard about our craft programme, she quickly signed up, hoping that craft could become more than just a hobby, but a way to earn and support her family one day!

For the first time, Sandra received structured guidance, from learning how to sew properly, plan product sizes, to improving the quality of her work.

“It was the first time we received proper teaching,” she said. “I really appreciate the opportunity to learn.”

More than just learning new techniques, the experience helped her see her own abilities in a new light. “I hope this can one day generate income,” she shared. “And hopefully our community can grow together too.”

Update 1

What do you usually do with clothes or materials you no longer use?

Most of us throw them away. Sometimes we donate them, but a large portion still ends up as waste.

And if this continues, it’s not hard to imagine a future where waste becomes part of our everyday surroundings. Something we see more often than we’d like, even just outside our own homes 😖

Globally, around 92 million tonnes of textile waste are produced every year. In Malaysia alone, an estimated 433,000 metric tonnes end up as waste, with much of it still strong and usable!

Instead of seeing this as waste, we saw an opportunity!

Through our craft workshop programme, we teach rural women in Sabah how to give these materials a second life by turning what was once discarded into practical, handmade products. These materials are accessible and durable, making them ideal for learning and improving craft skills.
