Deep in rural Sabah, many remote families face a worsening daily struggle — food insecurity. For generations, communities in areas like Kota Belud have battled poor land conditions, inconsistent water access, and rising food costs. Families are often forced to choose between spending precious income on fresh food or growing low-quality crops that barely sustain them.

With limited income and little farming experience, how do you feed your growing family?

At Hopes Malaysia, we believe empowerment is the foundation of lasting change. Through our CSR Sustainable Farming initiatives, we equip rural Sabah families with the tools, training, and confidence to grow their own food and earn from their harvests — creating independence, dignity, and hope.

Over the years, our Sabah NGO has helped more than 1,000 rural families achieve long-term food security and supplementary income. Here’s how our impactful CSR farming model works:

1. Assessment — Finding Families Who Truly Need Support

Before enrolling any participants, our team conducts a careful selection process to ensure support reaches those who need it most. We assess each family’s background — their income, land suitability, household size, and commitment level.

This approach ensures that every CSR contribution is used responsibly and effectively, creating real, lasting benefits for rural families while maximizing impact for our partners.

2. Guidance — Equipping Families with Skills and Knowledge

Each selected family receives hands-on training and ongoing guidance from Hopes Malaysia’s experienced farming team. From land preparation and planting to pest control and harvesting, families learn sustainable and organic farming techniques that protect both soil and livelihood.

Our trainers are former project beneficiaries who now mentor their peers — a true cycle of empowerment within the community.

3. Monitoring — Ensuring Growth and Sustainability

Our work doesn’t stop once farms are established. We closely monitor each family’s progress through regular site visits, check-ins, and a dedicated community WhatsApp group. This helps us identify challenges early and celebrate success together.

High-performing farmers are further supported to expand their farms and sales, bringing them one step closer to sustainable, independent livelihoods.
