Did you know that Malaysians waste an estimated 17,000 tonnes of food every day?

Shockingly, almost 24% of that is still edibleenough to feed 12 million people three meals a day.

Food waste is more than just tossing out leftovers—it’s an environmental crisis. When we waste food, we’re also wasting the resources used to produce, package, and transport it. Landfills fill up, greenhouse gases increase, and the cycle of harm continues.

A land filled with piles of waste

But here’s the good news: you can reduce food waste in Malaysia with simple, everyday habits—and be part of the solution.

Why Reducing Food Waste Matters

Addressing food waste is a key part of achieving lasting sustainability. Reducing it supports UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste by 2030. Beyond environmental benefits, tackling food waste can also:

  • Feed the hungry in B40 and food-insecure communities.

  • Cut down household expenses by making smarter food choices.

  • Contribute to sustainable solutions, like composting for farming.

Every small action adds up to create a massive impact.

Small Changes, Big Impact: What You Can Do to Reduce Food Waste in Malaysia

Reducing food waste doesn’t require drastic lifestyle changes—just small, intentional habits:

  • Plan Your Meals: Avoid overbuying and reduce leftovers.

  • Store Food Properly: Label and organize to keep food fresh longer.

  • Cook Creatively: Transform leftovers into exciting new meals.

  • Compost Scraps: Turn kitchen waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer for your garden.

  • Donate Unused Food: Share excess food with local charities or those in need.

Imagine if every household made even one of these changes. Together, we could significantly reduce the mountains of wasted food piling up daily.

How Hopes Malaysia is Tackling Food Waste

At our Sabah NGO Hopes Malaysia, we go beyond reducing waste—we turn it into an opportunity for rural families to thrive.

Many families in rural Sabah struggle with rising costs of livestock feed, making it hard to rear fish for food or additional income. That’s why we’ve developed our waste-to-feed initiative, which teaches families how to transform dry food waste into affordable, nutritious animal feed.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Dry expired food waste is smashed and combined with nutrient-rich ingredients.

  2. The mixture is then transformed into pellets.

  3. Families use these pellets to rear tilapia fish, ensuring sustainable food security.

This approach is:

  • Cost-efficient: Reduces feed expenses.

  • Eco-friendly: Minimizes landfill waste.

  • Sustainable: Builds long-term self-reliance.
