Young people across Malaysia have the passion, creativity, and drive to shape a better, greener tomorrow. As climate change, poverty, and inequality become more visible across the country —especially in rural areas—Malaysian youth have a critical role to play in building a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future.

Why Youth Matter in Sustainable Development
In Malaysia, youth are defined as individuals aged between 15 and 30 (extendable to 35 under the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act). This age group makes up a significant portion of the population and represents a powerful force for social change and innovation.
However, challenges still persist—especially in rural and underserved areas like Sabah and Sarawak. Communities in East Malaysia often face limited access to clean water, food insecurity, poor infrastructure, and higher youth unemployment rates. For some, these struggles have passed down through generations.
But this trend doesn’t have to continue. Youth volunteerism and action can create the turning point.
How Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Change Can Build a Better Malaysia
At Hopes Malaysia, a community-driven NGO based in Kota Belud, Sabah, we work closely with rural families to address long-standing issues through sustainable, long-term solutions. Our work includes:
Building clean gravity-fed water systems
Supporting sustainable farming and food security
Empowering rural families through small business capacity building
These projects are designed to empower vulnerable families to live sustainable, more self-sufficient lives that creates a lasting impact—but we can’t do it alone. Youth empowerment in Malaysia for sustainable change starts with people like you.
You(th) Can Make a Difference—Here’s How
Although our work focuses on directly providing the beneficiary with the means for a better life, that does not mean you cannot play a role in making a difference in their lives with us.
You, the youth of Malaysia, the world and today, are vital to continuing this mission. Whether you're a student, young professional, or community leader, your voice and actions can create real impact for our charity and project families. There are so many ways you can help shape Malaysia’s sustainable future and uplift rural communities.
1. Use Your Voice Online
Help us spread awareness. By simply liking and sharing our stories on social media, you amplify the voices of families in rural Sabah who are often left behind.

You can be the digital voice for these disconnected families, right from your own home. The power is at your fingertips.
2. Organize a Youth Fundraiser
Plan a simple charity run, eco-market, donation drive, or awareness campaign at your school, university, or local community. These activities don’t just raise funds, but they also educate and unite others for a common cause, bringing to light the importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You are able to bring significant impact to the less fortunate through your efforts!
3. Collaborate with Your Institution
Students from local higher learning institutions like SEGi University and Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (KTJ), have all played a part in creating sustainable change with Hopes Malaysia. Your college or youth organization can too.
