Sabah Rural Poverty: Why Poor Infrastructure Keeps Families Trapped

In many rural parts of Sabah, especially in Kota Belud, families continue to face daily struggles due to poor infrastructure. These aren’t just minor inconveniences. They’re life-defining challenges that make it nearly impossible for them to break free from generational poverty.
While many of us get to enjoy clean water, safe roads, and reliable electricity, these basic needs still remains out of reach for many rural Sabahans. Without them, building a better future becomes incredibly hard.
Here's why this issue matters:
1. No Access To Clean Water
In many villages across Kota Belud, homes are completely disconnected from the public water supply. Families are forced to rely on damaged gravity-fed water systems or collect unfiltered river water for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. This exposes them to waterborne diseases and constant water shortages, putting their health at constant risk.
2. Dangerous & Inaccessible Roads
Most rural roads in rural areas are either poorly built or never maintained. Many are rocky, muddy, or washed-out, especially during bad weather.

These rough roads cut off entire villages from basic essentials like access to healthcare, schools, markets, and jobs. For many families, just getting to town is a risky, exhausting journey that hinders progress and opportunity.
3. School Children Risking Their Lives
In most rural Sabah areas, the only way to get to school is by crossing unstable hanging bridges over fast-flowing rivers.

These bridges are often damaged, with missing planks or rusty wires. Every day, children had to risk their safety just to pursue their education. These unsafe routes also limit farmers, traders, and other community members from moving freely, which affects their ability to earn and grow.
4. How Poor Infrastructure Fuels Sabah Rural Poverty and Low Incomes
When a village lacks basic infrastructure, even the most hardworking rural families struggle to earn a living. Based on our on-the-ground experience, some rural households in Kota Belud survive on as little as RM550 a month—for a family of five.
This is a clear reflection of the Sabah rural poverty crisis, where limited access to clean water, safe transportation, and sustainable farming support directly affects a family’s ability to thrive.
