In the quiet rural village of Kampung Melangkap Baru, Kota Belud, clean water isn’t just a necessity—it’s a daily struggle. For 500 villagers, the reality of living without a consistent water supply isn’t a temporary inconvenience; it’s a heartbreaking, life-altering challenge.
Disconnected from Sabah’s public water supply and lacking a functional gravity water system, 59 local families are left with their taps running dry, receiving absolutely no access to clean water at home. With no functioning main storage tanks and a water source that is unable to fulfill the growing population’s needs, these villagers have had to resort to unsustainable, last-ditch efforts to survive.
Life Without Clean Water In Kampung Melangkap Baru
Here’s what survival looks like for these villagers:
Rainwater collection: Families collect and store unhygienic rainwater, risking their health.
Long treks to rivers: Daily walks to fetch heavy buckets of unsafe river water drain their strength and time.
Purchasing bottled water: Money is spent on trips to town for clean water, stretching already fragile finances and increasing plastic waste.
Using unreliable water pumps: Few homes share costly pumps to collect river water, but frequent breakdowns add financial and emotional strain.
These temporary measures take a toll not just on physical health but also on livelihoods, finances, and mental well-being.
“We Don’t Know How Much Longer We Can Survive Like This”
The fear of drought looms large. “We stress so much and don’t know what to do to get enough water. Cooking, drinking, and bathing are daily challenges,” shares Encik Jubilee, a villager who reached out to Hopes Malaysia for help.

This isn’t merely a story of hardship—it’s a call to action. Clean water is a basic human right, and yet these families are forced to live without it.
